Got Towed by NYPD? Here's How to Get Your Car Back

NYPD tow pounds are a half-day event even when everything goes right. What to bring, what it costs, and how to speed the process up.

Finding your car gone from where you parked it is a bad feeling. Before you assume it was stolen, check NYC's towed-vehicle lookup (call 311 or use the NYC Finest Parking app). If NYPD towed your vehicle, it's at one of the borough tow pounds and you can get it back — it's just a process.

The main NYPD tow pounds: Pier 76 in Manhattan (W 36th Street, near 12th Ave), Brooklyn Navy Yard (63 Flushing Ave), College Point in Queens, the Bronx facility on Zerega Avenue, and Staten Island's Western Avenue facility. Hours vary by location but most are open into the evening and weekends.

What to bring: valid ID (driver's license or state ID, must match the registration), vehicle registration (the paper one — they don't accept photos), proof of valid insurance (current NY auto policy), and payment for the tow fee plus any outstanding violations that triggered the tow. Missing any of these and you'll be sent home to come back.

Cost structure: tow fee itself is $185 for most standard tows, plus $20 per day of storage (first day is free, so a same-day recovery avoids storage fees). If the tow was for outstanding violations, those have to be paid at the pound before release. Some categories of violations (scofflaw enforcement) require full payment of all outstanding tickets, which can run into thousands.

Time estimate: budget 2–4 hours for a standard recovery, longer if the pound is busy or if there are payment issues. Most people lose a half-day of work. You also have to get to the pound (usually out of the way) and then drive the car home — which is often the first time you're seeing it since it was towed, so inspect for damage before driving off.

If you can't go yourself: you can authorize another person in writing, but the rules on this vary and sometimes require notarization. If you're out of town, this can become a real problem.

We offer an impound recovery service as an alternative. We handle the pound paperwork, pay the tow and storage fees (itemized on your invoice, so you see exactly what went to the pound vs. our service fee), and physically retrieve your vehicle. You get it back at your home, shop, or wherever you direct, usually same day. Flat-rate service fee plus the actual pound costs — no padding.

To avoid getting towed in the first place: pay attention to alternate-side-parking signs (they change seasonally and after holidays), don't park in fire lanes even if 'the spot looks fine' (fire lane enforcement is aggressive and instantaneous), don't leave your car parked without moving it for extended periods (abandoned vehicle complaints trigger tows), and don't park at private lots without permits (private-property tows are common and annoying to recover from).
